THCA Dabs: Temperature Guide, Dose Ladder and Setup

THCA Dabs: Temperature Guide, Dose Ladder and Setup

Updated October 13, 2026.

Dabbing THCA concentrate is simple once you understand one idea: heat does the work. THCA is the raw, non-intoxicating form of the compound, and it converts to THC when it is heated. That makes temperature the main thing to get right. The advice online is all over the place, so here is a clear chart, a beginner dose ladder and the basics of setup.

How THCA turns into THC

THCA becomes delta-9 THC through decarboxylation, a reaction triggered by heat. In the process, THCA loses mass. The conversion factor is about 0.877, which is why lab reports and some state rules use a "total THC" formula: delta-9 THC plus 0.877 times THCA. For a dab, the practical takeaway is that a concentrate testing at 75% THCA will deliver less than 75% THC after conversion, and that heat is required to activate it. Eating raw concentrate will not do much.

Temperature chart

Dab temperature ranges below follow Leafly's published guide, which describes low, mid, standard and hot ranges. Treat them as starting points, not rules.

Range Fahrenheit Celsius What to expect
Low temp 400 to 500 F 204 to 260 C More flavor, smoother, lighter clouds
Mid temp 500 to 545 F 260 to 285 C Balanced flavor and vapor
Standard 545 to 570 F 285 to 299 C Bigger clouds, less flavor
Hot 570 to 600 F and up 299 to 316 C Harsh, can scorch terpenes

Some rigs have lower floors: the Puffco Peak's lowest setting is 450 F, and Leafly notes that certain concentrates begin to melt as low as 350 F. Other guides, including a recent THCA diamond how-to, suggest 500 to 550 F. The takeaway: start low, work up only if you need to.

The timed cooldown method

If you use a torch and a quartz banger rather than an e-rig, you cannot read the temperature directly. Many guides use a timed method instead: heat the banger, then let it cool for a short count before you drop the dab in. A longer cooldown means a lower temp. Because torches, bangers and carb caps vary, treat any specific count as a starting point and adjust to taste.

Beginner dose ladder

  1. Step 1: grain of rice. Start here. Wait 10 to 15 minutes.
  2. Step 2: half a pea. Only if step 1 was gentle.
  3. Step 3: pea-size. A big dab for most people. It is a lot.

Concentrates are far stronger than flower. A dab that feels small can be a lot more intense than a puff of a joint. Go slow, and do not stack dabs back to back.

Setup basics

  • Rig and banger: a small glass rig with a quartz banger is the classic setup.
  • E-rig or e-nail: sets an exact temperature, which takes the guesswork out.
  • Dab tool: a titanium or quartz tool for placing the dab.
  • Carb cap: traps heat and lets you vaporize at lower temperatures.
  • Torch safety: use a stable surface and keep the flame away from anything flammable.

Choosing a concentrate

Diamonds, badder, live rosin and live resin all dab differently. Badder and rosin tend to be flavorful at lower temps. Diamonds are potent and more sensitive to technique. Our guide diamonds vs badder vs rosin compares them, and how to use THCA concentrates covers method. Shop live badder, live rosin and THCA hash.

FAQ

What temperature should I dab THCA at?

Start in the 400 to 500 F range for flavor and move up if you need more vapor.

Do I need to decarb THCA before dabbing?

No. The heat of the dab does the conversion as you inhale.

Why do I get a harsh hit?

Usually the temperature is too high or the dab is too large. Lower the temp and use less.

Is dabbing THCA legal everywhere?

No. Laws vary by state. See are THCA concentrates legal?

21+ only. Concentrates are strong. Cannabinoid content varies by batch. Source for temperature ranges: Leafly dab temperature guide. This is general information, not medical or legal advice.
